Since 1984, when he became art critic for The Nation, Arthur C. Danto, one of America's most inventive and influential philosophers, has also emerged as one of our most important critics of art. 미국의 철학자이자 미술 비평가. 웨인주립대학교에서 미술과 역사를 공부했으며 판화가로 활동하면서 컬럼비아대학교에서 철학 석사와 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 컬럼비아대학교에서 다양한 교수직을 역임하다가 1966년에 정교수가 되었다. 1984년부터 2009년까지 『네이션』의 미술 비평가로 활약했으며 미국철학회장과 미국미학회장을 역임했다. 그의 주 관심사는 사고, 감정, 예술 철학, 표상 이론, 철학적 심리학, 헤겔 미학, 그리고 메를로퐁티와 니체, 장폴 사르트르의 철학에 이르기까지 광범위했다. 단토는 1964년 앤디 워홀의 〈브릴로 상자〉를 보고 ‘어떤 인공품은 예술품이 되고, 또 어떤 인공품은 예술품이 되지 못하는가?’라는 논지의 화두를 미술계에 제기해 이목을 모았다. 같은 해 발표한 논문 「예술계」로 이 문제를 본격적으로 해부하면서 철학적 미학의 흐름을 바꾸어 놓았다. 2013년 10월 89세를 일기로 타계한 단토는 수많은 평론과 저서를 남겼다. 주요 저서로는 『예술의 종말 이후』와 1990년 미국도서평론가협회 평론 부문을 수상한 『만남과 성찰』을 비롯해 『일상적인 것의 변용』 『브릴로 상자를 넘어서』 『비자연적인 기적들』 『미래의 마돈나』 『앤디 워홀』 『무엇이 예술인가』 『미를 욕보이다』 등이 있다.
