텍사스 출신의 역사저술가이자 칼럼니스트이다. 1925년 1월 12일 텍사스 주 샌베니토(San Benito)에서 태어나 어린 시절을 텍사스와 로스앤젤레스에서 보냈다. 프린스턴 대학교에 다니던 중 제2차 세계대전이 일어나자 학업을 중단하고 육군 공병부대 부사관으로 입대해 참전했으며 중위로 전역했다. 전후 복학해 1947년에 프린스턴 대학교를 우수한 성적으로 졸업했다. 한국전쟁이 일어나자 육군에 복귀해 72전차대대 소속으로 참전했고, 72전차대대에서는 소대장과 중대장을 거쳐 참모장교가 되어 중령까지 진급했다. 전역 후 1954년에 텍사스 주 샌안토니오에 정착했으며 이후 15년 동안 보험 판매업을 하면서 부업으로 공상과학소설을 쓰고 신문과 잡지에 기고했다. 그의 두 번째 저서로 1963년에 출간되어 한국전쟁을 다룬 수작(秀作)으로 널리 인정받는 『이런 전쟁(This Kind of War)』은 미 육군사관학교와 미 육군지휘참모대학의 필독서로 지정되었다. 흥미롭게도 그는 자신이 한국전쟁에 참전한 사실을 이 책 어디에도 드러내지 않았다. 1968년에 (원래 소설로 쓰기 시작했다가 역사책으로 전환해) 출간한 Lone Star: A History of Texas and the Texans가 대성공을 거두면서 역사저술가로서 확고한 명성을 얻었다. 웅대하고 유장한 문체로도 유명한 이 책은 2000년까지 개정판이 나왔으며 오늘날에도 텍사스 역사서로 널리 읽히고 있다. 그는 『이런 전쟁(This Kind of War)』 외에도 한국전쟁을 다룬 Crossroads in Korea, the Historic Siege of Chipyong-Ni(1966)와 The Fight for Korea: from the War of 1950 to the Pueblo Incident(1969)를 추가로 남겼으며, Fire and Blood: A History of Mexico(1973), Comanches: The Destruction of a People(1974) 등을 포함해 총 18권의 역사책을 남겼다. 1983년부터 2001년까지 텍사스 역사위원회 위원으로 활동했으며, 1987년부터 1991년에는 위원장을 지냈다. 텍사스 역사위원회는 그가 텍사스 역사에 기여한 공을 인정하여 1986년에 페렌바크 출판상(Ferenbach Publications Award)을 제정했다. 그는 2013년 12월 1일 텍사스 샌안토니오에서 88세를 일기로 사망했다.
