수잔 맥클러리(지은이)
남일리노이대학 학부를 졸업하고 하버드대학 석사 및 박사학위를 받았다. 미네소타 주립대학, 맥길 대학, UC 버클리, UCLA를 거쳐 현재 케이스 웨스턴 리저브 대학 음악학 교수로 재직 중이다. 맥클러리는 서구 클래식 음악부터 대중음악까지 폭넓게 연구하며, 음악을 형언할 수 없는 순수하고 초월적인 존재로 상정하는 기존 클래식 음악계의 전제에 끊임없이 반론을 제기한다. 그녀를 가장 유명하게 만든 이 책을 비롯해 리처드 레퍼트와 함께 편집한 『음악과 사회-작곡, 연주, 수용의 정치학』 (Music and Society: The Politics of Composition, Performance and Reception, 1987), 『조르주 비제-카르멘』 (Georges Bizet: Carmen, 1992), 『17세기 음악의 욕망과 쾌락』 (Desire and Pleasure in Seventeenth-Century Music, 2012) 등 수많은 저술을 통해 음악이 정치ㆍ사회적 투쟁의 장임을 증명하고 있다. 또한 실험예술 창작에도 깊은 관심을 두고 있어, 음악극 『수산나가 장로들에게 한 일』(Susanna Does the Elders, 1987)을 썼고, 『힐데가르트』(Hildegard, 1989)를 공동작업하기도 했다.
