Process Theology is an introductory exposition of the theological movement that has been strongly influenced by the philosophies of Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne. 미국의 철학자, 신학자, 환경사상가. 1925년 일본 고베에서 감리교 선교사인 부모 사이에 태어났으며, 1952년 시카고대 대학원에서 앨프리드 노스 화이트헤드의 제자인 찰스 하츠혼의 지도로 박사학위를 받았다. 1958년부터 클레어몬트신학대학원과 클레어몬트대학원 종교학과에서 과정철학, 과정신학을 가르쳤으며, 1973년 동료 데이비드 그리핀과 함께 과정사상연구소를 세웠다. 기독교와 불교의 대화를 추진하고, 화이트헤드 사상을 지구환경 위기에 응답하는 생태철학으로 발전시켰다. “20세기 북미의 가장 중요한 신학자”(게리 도리언)로 꼽히는 그는 『기독교 자연신학』 『과정신학』 『대화를 넘어서』 『생명의 해방』 『공동선을 위하여』 등 50여 권의 저서를 냈으며, 2014년 학자들의 영예인 미국예술과학아카데미 회원으로 위촉됐다.
