현대 미국문학을 대표하는 소설가이자 에세이스트, 시인, 번역가, 시나리오 작가. 1947 년 미국 뉴저지주의 폴란드계 유대인 가정에서 태어났으며, 컬럼비아대학교에서 문학을 전공했다. 1980년대 《뉴욕 3부작》으로 문단의 주목을 받으며 실종과 우연, 반복과 고독을 축으로 한 독창적인 서사를 구축했다. 도회적 감수성과 정제된 문체, 우연의 연쇄를 탐색하는 내러티브 장치로 ‘현대의 보르헤스’라 불리며, 사실주의와 형이상학적 상상력을 결합한 작품들로 전 세계 독자들의 사랑을 받았다. 《달의 궁전》 《우연의 음악》 《폐허의 도시》 《거대한 괴물》 등에서 운명과 정체성의 테마를 탐색해온 그는, 2000년대 들어 《환상의 책》과 《어둠 속의 남자》를 통해 상실 이후 삶을 이야기로 감당하는 방식과, 고통을 픽션으로 다루는 데 따르는 책임의 문제를 본격적으로 탐색했다. 그의 작품들은 40여 개 언어로 번역되었으며, 모턴 도언 제이블상, 펜/포크너상, 메디치 해외 문학상, 아스투리아스 왕자상 등을 수상했다. 2006년에는 미국 예술문학아카데미 회원으로 선출되었다. 《브루클린 풍자극》 《신탁의 밤》 《동행》 《공중 곡예사》 《스퀴즈 플레이》 등의 소설 외에도, 에세이 《빵 굽는 타자기》 《낯선 사람에게 말 걸기》, 시나리오 《마틴 프로스트의 내면의 삶》 《다리 위의 룰루》 등을 집필했다. 또한 자크 뒤팽, 장폴 사르트르, 스테판 말라르메 등의 작품을 영어로 옮긴 번역가이기도 하다. 마지막 장편소설 《바움가트너》를 투병 중 집필한 뒤, 2024년 4월 30일 향년 77세로 세상을 떠났다.
