허버트 실러(지은이)
현대 미국 사회의 가장 중요한 비주류 지식인의 한 사람으로 미디어 비평가이자 정치경제학자이다. 1919년 뉴욕에서 태어나 컬럼비아 대학에서 석사학위를, 뉴욕대학에서 경제학 박사학위를 받았다. 미디어에 관심을 갖게 된 그는 줄곧 비판적인 미디어 학자의 길을 걸었는데, 1969년 캘리포니아 주립 대학으로 자리로 옮기고 이곳에서 평생 동안 활동하였다. 2000년 지병인 폐병으로 사망하였다.
