《슬레이트(Slate)》에서 “전쟁 이야기(War Stories)”라는 칼럼을 연재하고 있다. 《보스턴 글로브(Boston Globe)》에서 기자로 활동하면서 “핵시대의 전쟁과 평화(War and Peace in the NuclearAge)” 특별 취재에 공동으로 참여하여 1983년 국내 보도 부문(National Reporting) 퓰리처상을 수상한 캐플런은 『반란: 데이비드 퍼트레이어스와 미국의 전쟁수행 방법을 바꾸기 위한 계획(The Insurgents: David Petraeus and the Plot to Change the American Way of War)』(2014년 퓰리처상 논픽션 부문 최종 후보작), 『1959년: 모든 것이 바뀐 해(1959: The Year Everything Changed)』, 『백일몽을 믿는 사람들: 위대한 아이디어는 어떻게 미국의 패권을 무너뜨렸는가(Daydream Believers: How a Few Grand Ideas Wrecked American Power)』, 그리고 『아마겟돈의 마법사(The Wizards of Armageddon)』(《워싱턴 먼슬리(Washington Monthly)》가 선정한 올해의 정치서적 수상) 등을 집필했다.
