Raymond Boudon is one of the best known European writers in social theory today and is also celebrated for his extensive contributions to empirical Sociology. Theories of Social Change, now available in paperback, is a classic statement of the position he advocates.
Boudon provides a wide-ranging and incisive critique of the existing theories of social change in sociology, documenting his ideas with empirical illustrations. He also adds his own distinct and original contributions to the analysis of social change. In his view, social life is in a fundamental sense marked by 'disorder'. Not only are there laws of social life, but patterns of social change continually diverge from the outcomes which social actors attempt to achieve.

파리 고등사범학교 출신의 사회학자로, 미국의 경험적 사회학과 유럽의 철학 및 사회사상사적 전통을 가장 독창적으로 종합한 세계적 석학이다. 프랑스 학계보다 세계 사회학 공동체에 더 잘 알려져 있는 부동은 미국의 명문대학(하버드·시카고·컬럼비아 대학 등) 및 유럽의 여러 대학(제네바·옥스퍼드 대학 등)에서 가르쳤다. 그는 1967년부터 2002년까지 프랑스 파리 소르본 대학 교수를 지냈으며, 지금은 소르본 대학(파리 IV대학) 명예교수이며, 프랑스 학술원 및 유럽과 미국의 여러 학술원 회원이다. 그의 사회학의 특징은 칼 포퍼(K. Popper)와 레이몽 아롱(R.
