버나드 루이스(지은이)
20-21세기 최고의 중동-이슬람학 학자로, 1916년 런던에서 태어났다. 1949년 런던 대학교의 오리엔트-아프리카학 대학(SOAS) 교수가 되었다. 1974년 미국 프린스턴 대학교의 교수로 옮겼다. 1940년 첫 저술을 발표한 이래 수많은 중동-이슬람학 관련 서적을 출간했다. 대표 저술로는 『이슬람 1400년(The World of Islam)』, 『아랍인의 역사(The Arabs in History)』, 『근대 터키의 성장(The Emergence of Modern Turkey)』, 『이스탄불과 오스만 제국 문명(Istanbul and the Civilization of the Ottoman Empire)』, 『암살단(The Assassins)』, 『무슬림의 유럽 발견사(The Muslim Discovery of Europe)』, 『이슬람의 정치 언어(The Political Language of Islam)』, 『중동의 인종과 노예 제도(Race and Slavery in the Middle East)』, 『문화 갈등(Cultures in Conflict)』 등이 있다. 그의 저술은 대부분 아랍어, 페르시아어, 터키어, 인도네시아어, 한국어 등 20개 이상의 언어로 번역되었다. 2018년 102세를 일기로 타계했다.
