The salmagundi of prose poems, prose-poetic musings, criticism, and reflections that is Divagations has long been considered a treasure trove by students of aesthetics and modern poetry. If Mallarmi¿½ captured the tone and very feel of fin-de-sii¿½cle Paris, he went on to captivate the minds of the greatest writers of the twentieth century--from Vali¿½ry and Eliot to Paul de Man and Jacques Derrida. 프랑스 파리에서 관리의 아들로 태어나 5세 때 어머니를 여의고 외할아버지 밑에서 자랐다. 상스의 중학교에 입학하면서 시를 쓰기 시작했다. 샤를 보들레르의 《악의 꽃》을 읽고 깊은 영향을 받았으며, 이때 보들레르가 번역한 에드거 앨런 포의 작품들을 접했다. 대학입학자격시험에 합격 후, 국유지 관리국의 하급 직원으로 직장생활을 했고, 20세가 된 1862년부터 문예지에 시와 평론을 발표하기 시작했다. 에드거 앨런 포의 작품을 읽고자 하는 열망으로 런던으로 건너가 1년간 영문학에 매진했다. 귀국 후에는 일생을 영어교사로 지냈다. 이후 포의 작품들을 직접 번역해 출간하는 한편, 낭만주의나 고답주의의 영향에서 벗어나 자신만의 시풍을 구축하는 데 몰두했다. 1871년, 〈목신의 오후〉와 더불어 말라르메의 대표작으로 꼽히는 장시 〈에로디아드〉를 발표했다. 1875년 〈목신〉의 원고를 르메르 출판사에 보냈다가 거절당하지만, 이듬해 에두아르 마네의 삽화를 실은 시집 《목신의 오후》가 드렌 출판사에서 출간되었다. 1884년부터 ‘화요회’를 만들어 문인과 예술가, 당대 지식인들과 교유했으며, 특히 폴 발레리, 앙드레 지드 같은 젊은 작가들을 비롯해 20세기 프랑스 문학계에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 1898년 9월 9일 발뱅에서 갑작스러운 호흡곤란으로 세상을 떠났다. 이듬해 《시집》이 사후 출간되었다.
