As a teenager during China’s Cultural Revolution, Ha Jin served as an uneducated soldier in the People’s Liberation Army. Thirty years later, a resident of the United States, he won the National Book Award for his novel Waiting, completing a trajectory that has established him as one of the most admired exemplars of world literature.
Ha Jin’s journey raises rich and fascinating questions about language, migration, and the place of literature in a rapidly globalizing world—questions that take center stage in The Writer as Migrant, his first work of nonfiction. Consisting of three interconnected essays, this book sets Ha Jin’s own work and life alongside those of other literary exiles, creating a conversation across cultures and between eras. 현재 영어로 작품 활동하는 작가 중 노벨문학상에 가장 근접한 작가라 불리는 하 진은 1956년 중국 랴오닝에서 태어났다. 본명은 진쉐페이金雲飛. 하 진은 필명 진하金哈의 영어 표기다. 14세부터 20세까지 중·소 국경에서 인민해방군으로 복무했고, 이후 헤이룽장 대학교에서 영문학 학사를, 산둥 대학교에서 영문학 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 1985년 미국으로 건너가 브랜다이스 대학교에서 영문학 박사 학위를 받았다. 1989년 미국에서 톈안먼 사태를 접한 그는 미국에 남기로 결심하고, 영어로 작품을 쓰기 시작했다. 1996년 《호랑이 싸움꾼은 찾기 힘들어》로 펜 헤밍웨이 문학상을, 1997년 《붉은 깃발 아래에서》로 플래너리 오코너 단편문학상을 받아 미국문학의 흐름에 당당히 합류했고, 1999년 출간된 《기다림》으로 그해 전미 도서상과 2000년 펜 포크너상을 수상, 퓰리처상 최종 후보에까지 오르며 미국 문단에 파란을 일으켰다. 이후 2004년에는 한국전쟁을 배경으로 한 소설 《전쟁쓰레기》로 다시 펜 포크너상을 수상했고, 퓰리처상 최종 후보에 올랐다. 그 외에도 《광인》 《니하오 미스터 빈》 《멋진 추락》 등의 대표작이 있다. 2014년 현재 보스턴 대학교 영문과 창작학부 교수로 재직 중이다.
