수잔 와이즈 바우어(지은이)
1968년 버지니아에서 태어나 초·중·고 과정을 홈스쿨링으로 마친 후 17세에 문학과 언어 부문 미국 최고의 대학인 William & Mary in Virginia에 대통령 전액 장학생으로 입학하였다. 옥스퍼드대학교 교환학생으로 20세기 신학을 공부하고 미국에 돌아와 수석으로 대학을 졸업한 후, 영문학과 미국 종교사 두 개의 전공에서 석사 학위를 취득했으며 미국학으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 1994년부터 동 대학에서 영문학 교수로 재직 중이다. 라틴어, 히브루어, 그리스어, 아랍어, 프랑스어, 한국어를 구사하며 다방면의 장서를 넓고 깊게 읽는 다독가이자 자신의 지식을 쉬운 문체로 풀어쓸 줄 아는 친절한 선생님으로서 『세계 역사 이야기』, 『독서의 즐거움』 등 다수의 베스트셀러를 썼다.
