1945년 미국 펜실베이니아 주 피츠버그에서 출생했다. 버지니아 주 홀린스 대학에서 문학과 창작을 공부했으며, 1964년 시인이자 실험적 소설가이자 자신의 글쓰기 스승인 리처드 딜러드(Richard Henry Wilde Dillard)와 결혼했다. 당시 리처드 딜러드는 홀린스 대학에서 인기 있었던 창작 강의 프로그램의 책임자였다. 그녀는 자신이 글쓰기에 대해 아는 것은 모두 그에게 배웠다고 말한다. 1968년 같은 대학에서 헨리 데이비드 소로의 『월든』에 관한 논문으로 영문학 석사 학위를 받았다. 1971년 폐렴을 앓은 후에 보다 충만한 삶을 살고자 버지니아 주 팅커 크릭 지역의 자연 속에 살면서 쓴 『팅커 크릭 순례(Pilgrim at Tinker Creek)』(1974, 한국어판 제목 “자연의 지혜”)로 퓰리처상을 수상(1975)하면서 작가로서의 입지를 굳혔다. 이후 소설가, 시인, 수필가, 문학비평가로 활발히 활동하며 많은 상과 찬사를 받아 왔다. 퓰리처상을 받고 나서 언론의 주목을 피해 워싱턴 주에 위치한 섬으로 멀리 이사했는데, 거기서 작가이자 인류학자인 게리 클레비던스(Gary Clevidence)와 만나 1976년 두 번째 결혼을 했다. 워싱턴 주 웨스턴워싱턴 대학교에서 강사(1975~79)를 지냈으며, 1979년 코네티컷 주로 이사해 1980년부터 21년간 웨슬리언 대학교 교수로 있다가 2002년 퇴임했다. 보스턴 대학(1986), 하트퍼드 대학교(1993), 코네티컷 대학(1993)으로부터 명예박사 학위를 받았다. 1988년 역사학자이자 소로(1986)와 에머슨(1995)의 전기 작가로 유명한 로버트 리처드슨(Robert D. Richardson)과 세 번째 결혼을 했다. 다른 주요 작품으로 『돌에게 말하는 법 가르치기(Teaching a Stone to Talk)』(1982), 『메이트리 사람들(The Maytrees)』(2007) 등이 있다. 1998년 미국예술문학아카데미로부터 문학아카데미상을 수상했고, 2015년 인간의 삶과 자연을 시와 산문으로 깊이 성찰해낸 공로를 인정받아 버락 오바마 대통령으로부터 국가인문학훈장(National Humanities Medal)을 수훈했다.
