버트런드 러셀(지은이)
20세기의 가장 중요하고 대표적인 철학자들 중의 한 사람이다. 주요 관심사는 수학의 기초에 관한 것으로, 화이트헤드와 같이 집필한 『수학 원리Principia Mathematica』(전 3권)는 수학의 전 체계를 단순하면서도 자명한 진리들의 체계로부터 연역해내려고 시도한 현대논리학의 고전이다. 그는 케임브리지대학의 트리니티칼리지에서 화이트헤드로부터 수학을 배웠고, 이후 철학을 공부하였다. 러셀은 어렸을 때 양친을 여의고 청교도적이고 엄격한 신앙을 가진 할머니 아래에서 유년기를 보냈는데, 자신이 수학과 철학에 관심을 가지게 된 것도 그때의 영향 때문이라고 나중에 술회하고 있다. 러셀은 처음에 헤겔 철학을 공부하였으나 이후 이에 관한 비판을 행하면서 논리적 분석의 중요성을 강조하여 분석철학의 문을 열어놓았으며, 논리학사에서 “거짓말쟁이 역설”을 발견한 것으로도 유명하다. 그는 케임브리지대학에서 수년간 가르쳤으며, 비트겐슈타인도 그의 제자였다. 1950년에 노벨문학상을 받았으며 반전 반핵 평화운동가로서도 세계적으로 많은 활동을 한 러셀은 논리학이나 인식론 이외에도 철학의 다른 분야의 많은 문제를 광범위하게 다루었고, 사회적인 문제와 도덕적인 문제에 대한 다수의 저서를 출판하였다.
