데이비드 D. 번즈(지은이)

인지행동치료의 최고 권위자이자, 심리치료 전문가들이 가장 존경하는 정신의학자다. 1970년 스탠퍼드대학교에서 의학박사 학위를 받았고, 1974년 펜실베이니아 의과대학에서 정신의학 수련의 과정을 마쳤다. 기초정신의학 연구로 A. E. 베네트상을 받았고, 미국응용예방심리학협회 우수공로상, 미국인지행동치료사협회 우수공로상 등을 수상했다. 또한 스탠퍼드대학교 의과대학의 ‘올해의 교사’로 세 번 선정되었다. 현재 스탠퍼드대학교 의과대학 심리행동과학과 명예교수로서 연구와 강의 활동을 하고 있다. 또 매년 미국과 캐나다의 정신건강 전문가들을 대상으로 워크숍을 활발히 실시하고 있다. 인간의 심리와 기분에 따른 변화를 40년 넘게 탐구한 그의 관심은 자연스럽게 인간관계 연구로 확장되었다. 불편한 인간관계로 고통받는 사람들을 상담하고 조언했으며, 절망에 빠진 사람들의 삶을 되찾는 데 큰 도움을 준 학자로 평가된다. 상담과 임상 결과를 바탕으로 쓴 그의 책은 전 세계 20여 개 나라에서 출간되어 수십만 부에서 수백만 부 이상 판매되었다. 미국에서만 500만 부 이상 판매된 베스트셀러 《필링 굿》을 비롯하여 《필링 굿 핸드북》, 《자신감에 이르는 10단계》, 《패닉에서 벗어나기》 등의 책을 썼다.
