Faszinierende Utopie der Stadt im Wandel

A world without borders, capable of flowing out in all directions and allowing its residents to develop as freely as they do flexibly. This fascinating utopia of architectural and organic growth of the living environment forms the starting point of Constant Nieuwenhuys (19202005) lifelong project: New Babylon. Between 1956 and 1974, the Dutch painter and co-founder of the avant-garde movement COBRA worked on numerous models, paintings, drawings, and collages for the purpose of depicting his vision of the nomadic city of the future. The catalogue focuses not only on the architectural aspects but embraces them as an artists synthesis of the arts. Besides his models, drawings, and collages, attention is also given to the designs in order to trace the creative artistic process. This not only provides extensive insight into utopian urban planning, but to a greater degree into a mode of thought and imagination. Exhibition: Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag, 28.5.25.9.2016

Eine offene Stadt ohne Grenzen, die sich wie Flussigkeit in alle Richtungen auszudehnen vermag, um seinen Bewohnern eine ebenso freie wie flexible Entfaltung zu erlauben. Diese faszinierende Utopie eines architektonischen und lebensweltlichen Wachsens bildete den Ausgangspunkt zu Constants lebensumspannenden Projekts: New Babylon. Der niederlandische Maler und Mitbegrunder der Kunstlergruppe COBRA (1920-2005) arbeitete zwischen 1956 und 1974 an zahlreichen Modellen, Gemalden, Zeichnungen und Collagen, um seine Vision der nomadischen Stadt der Zukunft darzustellen. Der Katalog richtet seinen Fokus nicht nur auf die architektonischen Aspekte, sondern erfasst diese als das Gesamtwerk eines Kunstlers. Neben seinen Modellen, Zeichnungen und Collagen werden auch den Entwurfen ein wichtiger Platz eingeraumt, um den kunstlerischen Schaffensprozess nachzuzeichnen. Damit wird ein tiefgreifender Einblick gewahrt, der nicht nur eine utopische Stadtplanung, sondern vielmehr eine Art des Denkens und Imaginierens vorstellt.
