츠베탕 토도로프(지은이)
불가리아 태생의 프랑스 철학자, 문학이론가, 역사학자, 사회학자. 1939년 불가리아의 수도 소피아에서 태어나 소피아대학교에서 철학을 공부했으며, 공산당 정권을 피해 1963년 프랑스 파리로 건너가 1970년 프랑스 국가박사학위를 받고 1973년 프랑스 국적을 취득했다. 구조주의의 영향 아래 문예비평을 시작한 이후, 러시아 형식주의를 프랑스에 소개하여 동시대 문학 담론을 풍부히 하는 데 기여했으며 본 저서로 문학 연구의 장에서 환상문학의 위상을 끌어올렸다. 1980년대부터는 식민주의와 홀로코스트 문제에 비판적 관심을 두고 사상사, 기억, 타자 등의 문제로 연구 지평을 넓혔다. 이처럼 인문학의 다양한 분야에서 펼친 왕성한 연구와 저술을 통해 세계적 지성으로 평가받았다. 프랑스 국립과학연구소CNRS 연구원장으로 재직했고, 하버드대학교, 예일대학교, 뉴욕대학교 등 미국 유수의 대학에서 강의했다. 《문학이론, 러시아 형식주의자들의 텍스트들Theorie de la litterature, textes des formalistes russes》, 《산문의 시학Poetique de la prose》, 《구조주의란 무엇인가Qu’est-ce que le structuralisme?》, 《아메리카의 정복: 타자의 문제La conquete de l’Amerique: la question de l’autre》부터 2010년대의 《전체주의의 경험: 인간의 서명L’experience totalitaire: la signature humaine》, 《빛의 그늘 아래 있는 고야Goya a l’ombre des Lumieres》 등에 이르기까지 다방면에 걸쳐 30여 권의 저서가 있다. 2017년 2월 타계했다.
