마커스 드 사토이(지은이)
옥스퍼드 대학교 수학과 교수이자 영국 왕립학회 회원이다. 군론(group theory) 분야를 연구하며, 2001년에는 런던수학협회가 40세 미만의 수학자가 이룬 가장 뛰어난 수학 연구에 수여하는 베릭 상을 수상했다. 리처드 도킨스(Richard Dawkins)의 뒤를 이어 2008년에 과학대중화사업(Public Understanding of Science)의 책임자인 시모니 석좌교수(Simonyi Chair)로 부임했다. 과학 대중화에 앞장선 공로로 2009년에 영국 왕립학회에서 수여하는 패러데이 상을 받았으며, 2010년에는 영국 왕실로부터 대영제국훈장(OBE)을 받았다. BBC 방송국의 ‘수학이야기(The Story of Maths)’ 시리즈와 수학 코미디 쇼 ‘골치 아픈 학교(The School of Hard Sums)’ 등 다양한 교양과학 프로그램에 출연하면서 과학대중화에 힘쓰고 있다. 저서로는 《소수의 음악(The Music of the Primes)》, 《대칭(Finding Moonshine)》, 《수의 신비(The Number Mysteries)》, 《내 생애 한 번은 수학이랑 친해지기(How to Count to Infinity)》 등이 있다.
