베릴 베인브리지(지은이)
1932년 영국 리버풀에서 태어났다. 노동계급의 섬뜩한 비극을 묘사하는 심리소설로 유명하다. 대영제국 훈장 데임 커맨더를 수훈했고, ‘국가적 보물’로 명명됐으며, ‘1945년 이후 가장 위대한 영국 소설가 10인’에 이름을 올렸다. 2007년 BBC에서 그의 삶을 다룬 다큐멘터리 〈베릴의 마지막 해Beryl’s Last Year〉가 방송됐으며, 부커상 최종 후보에 다섯 차례나 이름을 올려, 2011년 특별 명예 부커상을 수상하기도 했다. 세 아이를 홀로 키우며 단역배우로 일하다 1960년대 중후반부터 소설을 쓰기 시작했다. 초기 소설들은 평단의 호평을 받았지만 대중적 호응을 얻지는 못했다. 1973년 네 번째 소설 『재봉사The Dressmaker』로 부커상 최종 후보에 오르며 유명 작가로 발돋움했다. 다음 해 발표한 『포도주병 공장 야유회』는 직접 병 공장에서 일한 경험으로부터 영감을 얻어 쓴 작품으로, 역시 부커상 최종 후보에 올랐으며 가디언 소설상을 수상했고 〈옵저버〉 선정 ‘인류 역사상 가장 위대한 책 100’에도 꼽히면서 그의 대표작으로 자리매김했다. 주요 작품으로 휫브레드상 수상작 『인저리 타임Injury Time』, 부커상 최종 후보작 『끔찍이 대단한 사건An Awfully Big Adventure』, 부커상 최종 후보작이자 휫브레드상 수상작 『할 수 있는 자가 구하라Every Man for Himself』, 부커상 최종 후보작 『마스터 조지Master Georgie』 등이 있다. 마지막 소설 『물방울무늬 드레스를 입은 여자The Girl in the Polka Dot Dress』를 집필하다 2010년 세상을 떠났다.
