Selected from over 160 titles this is an anthology of non-fiction writings by one of South Africa's most respected writers and author of the Booker Prizewinner "The Conservationist". She also wrote "Burger's Daughter", "July's People" and "A Sport of Nature". The editor of this collection explains in his introduction that the essays illustrate the relationship between outer and inner change for the writer of conscience in South Africa. From the relative optimism of the 1950s to Sharpeville and the banning of the ANC to the challenges of the black consciousness movement in the 1970s and the "interregnum" of the 80s, Gordimer rigorously analyzes political events. Her stand on censorship is unequivocal and her commitment to the community of writers - black and white - is forthright.

세계 인권운동의 상징이라 할 수 있는 넬슨 만델라가 28년간의 수감생활을 마치고 옥문을 나서며 “나는 나딘을 만나야 합니다”라고 했을 만큼 남아프리카공화국의 양심을 상징하는 작가. 아파르트헤이트(인종차별 정책)가 백인과 흑인 모두에게 미치는 파괴적인 영향을 비판적인 시각으로 바라본 다수의 작품들을 발표했고, 1991년 노벨문학상을 수상했다. 노벨위원회는 고디머를 수상자로 발표하며 “노벨의 유언처럼 그는 장엄한 서사적 소설들로 인류에 위대한 공헌을 했다”고 선정 이유를 밝혔다. 1923년 남아프리카공화국 하우텡주 요하네스버그 교외에 위치한 탄광촌 스프링스에서 유대계 이민자 집안의 딸로 태어나, 비트바테르스란트대학교에서 교양 과정만 이수한 후 중퇴했다. 그즈음 고디머는 인종차별에 기반한 남아프리카공화국의 기이한 정치현실에 눈을 뜨고, 소설을 쓰기 시작했다. 1937년 첫 단편소설 〈금을 찾아서The Quest for Seen Gold〉를, 1949년 첫 단편집《얼굴을 대면하고Face to Face》를, 1953년 첫 장편소설 《거짓의 날들》을 발표했다. 이후 아파르트헤이트에 맞서 넬슨 만델라가 이끌던 흑인정치조직 아프리카민족회의ANC에 가입하는 등 번번이 백인 정권과 마찰을 빚어《줄라이의 사람들July’s People》(1981) 등 책 세 권이 판매 금지되기도 했다. 노벨위원회가 고디머의 초기작 중 주목할 만한 작품으로 꼽은 《명예로운 손님A Guest of Honour》(1971)과 《보호주의자들The Conservationist》(1974)은 각각 제임스 테이트 블랙 기념상과 영연방 최고의 문학상인 부커 상을 수상했다. 그 외에도 《이방인들의 세계A World of Strangers》(1958),《가버린 부르주아의 세계The Late Bourgeois World》(1966), 《버거의 딸Burger’s Daughter》(1979) 등 15편의 장편소설과 《6피트의 시골 땅Six Feet of the Country》(1956), 《프라이데이의 발자국Friday’s Footprint》(1960) 《왜 당신은 쓰지 않았는가Why haven’t You Written》(1993) 등 21권의 단편집을 발표했다. 스미스 문학상, 프랑스 문학상 등을 수상했고, 1999년 남아프리카 국민훈장과 2007년 레지옹 도뇌르 훈장을 수훈했다.
