1907년 11월 30일 프랑스 크레타유 출생. 미국 지성계에서 중용과 건전한 비판의 목소리를 대변해 온 역사학자다. 고전문학 교육의 필요성을 주장하며 미국 고등교육에 큰 영향을 미친 교육자이며, 특히 학문의 추상화를 경계하고 현실을 예리하게 분석하는 보기 드문 지식인이다. 1920년 미국으로 이주하여 1932년 컬럼비아 대학교에서 역사학으로 박사학위를 받았고, 1958년 학부장, 교무처장을 거쳐 1967년 명예교수가 되었다. 서른 권에 이르는 바전의 저서들은 모두 20세기 미국 사회에 지대한 영향을 끼친 베스트셀러다. 예술에 관한 저서로 <베를리오즈와 낭만주의>, <음악의 즐거움>, <예술의 원동력>, <고전·낭만·현대>, <저술, 편집, 출판에 관하여>, <기교의 사용과 남용>, 그리고 수사학을 다룬 <단순하고 명료하게> 등이 있다. <미국의 교사>와 <지성의 집> 같은 교육 문제를 다룬 책들은 중요한 논쟁들을 촉발했다. 한편 <과학, 위대한 유흥>은 과학적 사고의 과대평가를 경계하는 저작이다. 이 밖에 <인종, 현대의 미신>, <다윈, 마르크스, 바그너>, <인간의 자유에 관하여>, <프랑스 시에 관하여>, <윌리엄 제임스와의 산책> 등이 있다.
