The essays in this volume present the view that such collective actions as riots, protests, strikes and rebellions are coherent, if often unsuccessful attempts by working class people to defend or advance well-defined interests. 미국의 대표적인 사회학자이자 역사학자. 21세기 사회학의 창시자라는 평가를 받는다. 하버드대학 사회학과를 졸업한 이후 미시간대학과 컬럼비아대학에서 교수를 지냈다. 혁명, 민주화, 테러리즘 등 다양한 정치과정의 원인을 가려내는 일을 주로 연구하며 사회와 역사 곳곳에 숨은 ‘이유들’을 학문적으로 밝혀냈다. 말년에 집필한 『왜의 쓸모』에서는 일상에서 사람들이 얼마나 많은 이유를 다양한 관계에 맞추어 주고받는지를 탐구하며, 그 사회적 기능을 분석했다. 학제에 국한되지 않는 그의 연구는 사회학뿐 아니라 정치학, 역사학, 경제학 등 다양한 학문 분야에 깊은 영향을 끼쳤다. 총 50여 권의 책을 집필했으며 국내에는 『자본주의의 노동세계』 등 7권이 출간되었다.
