책소개
A textbook derived from the Open University course "Understanding Modern Societies", this work considers the forces which are reshaping modern industrial societies, together with new patterns, structures and relationships which are emerging in a "post-industrial" and increasingly "globalized" world. The key debates and their main protagonists are introduced and critically discussed. The book reassesses the promise and project of Enlightenment social science. In doing so, it examines the character of "modernity" and the relationship between "early modern" and "postmodern" societies, assessing whether the paradigms, models and theories used to explain and analyze "modern societies" are adequate for post-industrial societies.

스튜어트 홀(엮은이)
대표적인 미디어·문화연구 이론가로 영국 문화연구, 버밍엄학파의 창시자로 꼽힌다. 자메이카 킹스턴에서 태어나 자메이카대학을 졸업한 후 영국 옥스퍼드대학교에서 석사 학위를 받았다. 박사 과정에 진학했으나 학업을 중단하고 반핵 운동을 비롯해 신좌파 운동에 뛰어들어 핵심 인물로 활동했으며, <대학과 좌파 평론>과 <뉴 레프트 리뷰>의 편집장으로 활동했다. 1968년 버밍엄대학교 현대문화연구소 소장, 개방대학교 교수를 지내면서 ≪의례를 통한 저항≫, ≪위기 관리≫, ≪대처리즘의 문화정치≫ 등 많은 영향력 있는 저작을 집필했다. 이론적 저술뿐 아니라 <오늘의 마르크스주의> 등 잡지 기고, 텔레비전 출연 등 활발한 현실 참여 활동을 통해 영국 진보 정치와 노동당의 노선에도 많은 영향을 미쳤다.
