로버트 스키델스키(지은이)
1939년 출생. 영국의 경제사학자, 국제관계 전문가, 상원의원이자 워릭대학교 정치경제학 석좌교수. 옥스퍼드대학교 지저스(Jesus) 칼리지에서 역사학을 전공한 뒤 너필드(Nuffield) 칼리지에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았다. 1967년 박사학위 논문을 바탕으로 첫 번째 저서 『정치인과 불황(Politicians and the Slump)』을 펴냈고, 영국학술원(British Academy) 석학회원으로 연구 활동을 하면서 1969년 『영국 진보 학파(English Progressive Schools)』를 출간했다. 1970년 미국 존스홉킨스대학교 역사학 교수로 초빙됐는데, 1975년 펴낸 『오스월드 모슬리(Oswald Mosley)』 전기가 논란을 불러일으키면서 해임됐으며 모교 옥스퍼드대학교의 교수 임용 제안도 취소됐다. 오스월드 모슬리는 1930년대 영국파시스트연합(British Union of Fascists) 당수였던 인물이다. 이후 그는 노스런던대학교의 전신인 노스런던폴리테크닉에서 역사학 교수로 지내다가 1978년 워릭대학교 국제관계학 교수로 임용됐으며, 1990년 정치경제학 교수로 적을 옮겨 오늘에 이르고 있다. 1991년~2001년 사회시장재단(Social Market Foundation) 이사장을 역임했고, 글로벌연구센터(Centre for Global Studies)와 맨해튼연구소(Manhattan Institute) 이사로도 활동했다. 아울러 그는 정치가로서 네 곳의 정당에 몸담은 바 있다. 처음에는 영국 노동당 소속이었다가 1981년 사회민주당 창당 위원이 됐으며, 1988년 자유당과의 합병으로 자유민주당이 되고 1990년 공식 해체될 때까지 자리를 지켰다. 1991년 이스트석시스(East Sussex) 카운티 상원의원(종신 귀족)으로 추대된 뒤 1992년 보수당에 입당해 문화위원회 및 재정위원회 위원장으로 활동했으나, 1999년 북대서양조약기구(NATO)의 코소보 공습을 공개적으로 반대했다가 당시 보수당 당수 윌리엄 헤이그(William Hague)에 의해 위원장직에서 해임됐고, 2001년 탈당해 현재까지 중립의원(crossbencher)으로 남아 있다. 그가 경제 석학으로서 세계적 명성을 얻게 된 계기는 1970년 집필을 시작한 이래 30년에 걸쳐 완성한 역저 『존 메이너드 케인스(John Maynard Keynes)』 전기 3부작이다. 시리즈 제1권 『배반당한 희망, 1883-1920(Hopes Betrayed, 1883-1920)』이 1983년에 출간됐으며, 1992년의 제2권 『구원자로서의 경제학자, 1920-1937(The Economist as Savior, 1920-1937)』로 ‘울프슨 역사상(The Wolfson History Prize)’을 받았다. 2000년에 출간된 마지막 제3권 『영국을 위한 투쟁, 1937~1946(Fighting for Britain, 1937-1946)』은 ‘폴 로저 더프 쿠퍼상(The Pol Roger Duff Cooper Prize)’, ‘제임스 테이트 블랙 기념상(James Tait Black Memorial Prize)’, ‘라이어널 겔버상(Lionel Gelber Prize)’, ‘아서 로스 도서상(Arthur Ross Book Award)’, ‘베일리 기퍼드상(Baillie Gifford Prize)’을 수상했다. 이 밖에도 『화폐와 정부(Money and Government)』『얼마나 있어야 충분한가(How Much Is Enough?)』『흔들리는 자본주의 대안은 있는가(Keynes: The Return of the Master)』『공산주의 이후의 세계(The World After Communism)』 등의 책을 썼다. 국제 오피니언 미디어 「프로젝트신디게이트(Project Syndicate)」에 경제사 칼럼을 연재 중이며, 「뉴욕타임스(New York Times)」「워싱턴포스트(Washington Post)」「가디언(Guardian)」「인디펜던트(Independent)」 등의 리딩 언론에도 활발하게 기고하고 있다.
