수십 권의 책을 썼으며, 모두 대중의 사랑을 받았다. 특히 자연과학과 철학을 대중의 눈높이에 맞게 쉽게 풀어쓰는 데 주력하고 있다. 이런 업적을 인정받아, 원소주기율표를 창안한 멘델레예프의 삶과 사상을 묘사한 <멘델레프의 꿈>은 2001년도 아벤티스(Aventis) 우수과학 도서상을 받았다. 또한 <A Season in Abyssinia>로 서머셋 몸상을 수상했다. 2002년 현재 영국 킹스턴 대학에서 철학과 과학을 강의하고 있다.
