책소개
This book, by one of Italy's most important and original contemporary philosophers, represents a broad, general, and ambitious undertaking--nothing less than an attempt to rethink the nature of poetic language and to rearticulate relationships among theology, poetry, and philosophy in a tradition of literature initiated by Dante.
The author presents "literature" as a set of formal or linguistic genres that discuss or develop theological issues at a certain distance from the discourse of theology. This distance begins to appear in Virgil and Ovid, but it becomes decisive in Dante and in his decision to write in the vernacular. His vernacular Italian reaches back through classical allusion to the Latin that was in his day the language of theology, but it does so with a difference. It is no accident that in the Commedia Virgil is Dante's guide.
The book opens with a discussion of just how Dante's poem is a "comedy," and it concludes with a discussion of the "ends of poetry" in a variety of senses: enjambment at the ends of lines, the concluding lines of poems, and the end of poetry as a mode of writing this sort of literature. Of course, to have poetry "end" does not mean that people stop writing it, but that literature passes into a period in which it is concerned with its own ending, with its own bounds and limits, historical and otherwise.
Though most of the essays make specific reference to various authors of the Italian literary tradition (including Dante, Polifilo, Pascoli, Delfini, and Caproni), they transcend the confines of Italian literature and engage several other literary and philosophical authors (Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Boethius, the Proven al poets, Mallarm , and H lderlin, among others).

조르조 아감벤(지은이)
이탈리아의 철학자이자 미학자, 비평가. 파리 국제철학원, 이탈리아 베로나 대학, 베네치아 건축대학교 교수를 역임했다. 1995년 푸코의 생명철학과 슈미트의 예외상태를 토대로 로마 시대의 ‘호모 사케르’ 개념을 현대 정치에 적용해 쓴 『호모 사케르』를 발표하면서 이 시대의 가장 중요한 사상가 반열에 올랐다. 벤야민과 하이데거로부터 깊은 영향을 받았고, 비트겐슈타인, 블랑쇼, 데리다, 들뢰즈 같은 현대 사상가들과 플라톤, 스피노자 같은 고대와 중세의 철학자들, 유대-기독교 경전의 이론가와 학자들을 아우르는 사유 탐험을 지속해 왔다. 1995년부터 장장 20년에 걸쳐 집필한 9부작 호모 사케르 프로젝트를 2015년에 완성했다. 이 외에도 『내용 없는 인간』, 『유아기와 역사』, 『행간』, 『도래하는 공동체』를 비롯해 수많은 명저를 남겼다.
대니얼 헬러-로즌(옮긴이)
미국 프린스턴 대학 비교문학과 교수. 1974년 캐나다 토론토에서 태어나 토론토 대학을 졸업하고 미국 존스홉킨스 대학 인문학부 비교문학과에서 박사학위를 받았다. 존스홉킨스 대학 박사과정 재학 중에 『호모 사케르』 『아우슈비츠의 남은 자들』 등 조르조 아감벤의 대표 저작들을 영어로 번역, 소개했다. 프린스턴 대학에서 가르치기 시작하면서 『운명의 얼굴: 장미 이야기와 우연성의 시학』(2003)을 필두로 온갖 시대와 분야를 종횡무진하면서 독특하고 통찰력 있는 다양한 저서들을 격년 단위로 출간하고 있다. 지은 책으로 『내적 접촉: 감각의 고고학』(2007), 『만인의 적: 국민국가들의 법과 해적』(2009), 『다섯번째 망치: 세계의 불협화음과 피타고라스』(2011), 『검은 혀들: 사기꾼과 수수께끼를 내는 자들』(2013) 등이 있다. 2007년부터 프린스턴 대학의 인문학 전통 중 하나인 가우스 비평 세미나를 주관하고 있으며, 2010년에는 『천일야화』의 노튼 비평판을 편집하기도 했다. 미국 현대언어협회(MLA), 앤드루 W. 멜런 재단을 비롯한 여러 학술협회들로부터 연구 업적을 인정받았고, 2010년에는 콜레주 드 프랑스로부터 메달을 수여받기도 했다. 이탈리아어, 프랑스어, 독일어, 스페인어 등 현대 언어뿐 아니라 고대 및 중세의 여러 언어들, 즉 그리스어, 히브리어, 라틴어, 아랍어, 심지어 프로방스어까지 읽어낼 수 있는 언어의 천재로 정평이 나 있다. 그는 이 책에서 그러한 언어 천재로서의 면모를 한껏 발휘하고 있다.
