About the Author
Henri Michaux (1899–1984) was born in Namur, Belgium, the son of a lawyer. After contemplating careers in the church and in medicine, Michaux enlisted in the French merchant marine and traveled around the world. These travels inspired his first two books, Ecuador and A Barbarian in Asia. After settling in Paris, Michaux devoted himself to writing and painting and was soon known all around France—and eventually the world—for his work in both disciplines.Octavio Paz (1914-1998) was born in Mexico City, and his extraordinarily busy and fruitful life took him from civil-war Spain to surrealist Paris, from US universities to the Mexican embassy in New Delhi, where he served for six years as ambassador before resigning in protest after his government’s suppression of student demonstrations at the 1968 Olympic Games. A great poet, Paz was also the author of many essays and a study of Mexican identity, The Labyrinth of Solitude, as well as the founder and editor of two important journals, Plural and Vuelta. Octavio Paz received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990.
Louise Varèse (1891–1989) was an American writer and translator. In 1969 she was designated a Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Republic of France in recognition of her translations of Baudelaire, Sartre, Proust, Michaux, and Bernanos, among other writers. She and her husband, the composer Edgard Varèse, were close friends of Georges Simenon during his years in the United States, and she translated some fifteen of his novels.

옥타비오 파스 로사노(Octavio Paz Lozano, 1914~1998)는 멕시코의 시인, 작가, 비평가 겸 외교관이다. 멕시코시티에서 성장하였고, 진보적인 지식인이었던 할아버지의 영향으로 인해 문학에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 17세부터 시문학작품 활동을 시작하였으며, 19세 때에 첫 시집 <야생의 달 (Luna Silvestre)>을 발표했다. 1946년에 외교부에 들어갔으며, 외교관으로 파리, 제네바, 일본 등 여러 나라에서 일하면서 활발한 창작활동을 하여 많은 시집과 수필집을 발표했다. 20세기 후반 라틴아메리카를 대표하는 문학작가로 평가받고 있다. 1962년에 인도 주재 멕시코 대사로 임명되었고, 1968년에 멕시코 정부가 급진파 학생들이 일으킨 시위를 무력으로 탄압한 것에 대한 항의의 뜻으로 외교부를 사퇴했다. 이후 케임브리지 대학교와 텍사스 대학교, 하버드 대학교 등에서 교수로 근무하면서 문학 활동을 전개했다. 1981년에 세르반테스 상을 수상했으며 1990년에 노벨 문학상을 수상했다.
앙리 미쇼(지은이)
1899년 벨기에서 태어나 1955년 프랑스로 귀화 후 1984년 생을 마감할 때까지 파리에서 살았다. 1922년 《주기적 광증의 사례》를 비롯한 첫 작품들을 벨기에에서 발표한 이후, 1927년 첫 단행본 《나는 누구였는가》를 프랑스에서 출간하면서 문학인의 삶을 시작한다. 1929년 《에콰도르》와 1933년 《아시아로 간 야만인》을 발표하여 특별한 문학적 위상을 구축한다. 《위대한 가라반으로의 여행》, 《내면의 먼 곳을 뒤따르는 플륌》, 《마술의 나라에서》, 《안의 공간》, 《시련, 구마》, 《접힘 속의 인생》, 《통로들》, 《움직임》, 《잠든 자의 방식, 깨어난 자의 방식》, 《불행한 기적》, 《난간의 기둥》 등 많은 작품을 남겨 동시대와 후대 문학인들에게 영향을 미쳤다. 또한, 1937년 첫 미술 작품 전시회를 여는 등 예술가로서도 역동적인 삶을 살았다.
