앨빈 토플러와 함께 미래학의 양대 산맥으로 꼽히는 세계적인 미래학자다. 그의 대표작인 《메가트렌드》는 전 세계 57개 국가에서 1400만 부 이상 판매되었고, 106주 연속 《뉴욕 타임스》 베스트셀러 1위의 자리를 지켰다. 하버드, 코넬, 유타대학 등에서 수학한 후, IBM과 이스트만 코닥의 경영진으로 활동했다. 존 케네디 정부에서 교육부 차관보로 임명받았고 이후 린든 존슨 정부에서도 대통령 특별 고문으로 일하는 등 정부 요직에서 근무하기도 했다. 1966년 급진적인 사회 변화의 소용돌이가 다가오고 있다고 직감하여 정부를 떠나 미국의 경제, 사회, 정치, 문화적 변화를 연구하기 시작했고 1982년 《메가트렌드》를 내놓아 전 세계의 주목을 받았다. 현재 오스트리아 빈과 중국 톈진에 거주하며 연구와 강연 활동을 계속하고 있다. 주요 저서로는 《메가트렌드》 《메가트렌드 2000》 《하이테크 하이터치》 《마인드 세트》 《힘의 이동》 등이 있다.
