책소개
This classic textbook first written by Donald Jay Grout of Cornell U. traces the forms and modes of Western music from ancient Mesopotamia to the present, emphasizing musical styles and genres. For the new edition, Burkholder (Indiana U.) has also sought to highlight the people creating and receiving music, the choices they made, what they valued in music, and how these choices reflected both tradition and innovation. They have also incorporated more material on American jazz, popular, and other musics, while retaining the emphasis on "art music." Included in the text are such features as composer biographies, source readings, timelines, maps, color illustrations, and cross-references to an ancillary package of music CDs available through the publisher. 1960년에 『서양음악사』의 초판을 출판했다. 하버드 대학에서 박사 과정을 지낼 때부터 동 대학에서 음악교수로 재직했으며, 학위를 받은 뒤에는 텍사스 대학에서 교직에 종사했다. 이후 코넬 대학 창설 명예교수를 역임하는 등 미국 음악학계의 대가 중 한 명이었다. 다른 저서로는 『오페라의 짧은 역사 A Short History of Opera』(1947) 등이 있다. 1987년 타계했다.
J. 피터 부르크홀더(지은이)
인디애나 대학 음악학과 교수로, 미국 음악학 협회 회장 및 칼리지 뮤직 소사이어티(College Music Society) 임원 등을 역임했다. 1996년에 『서양음악사』 제5판과 『노튼 서양음악 선곡집』을 위한 『학습서 및 감상 지도서』를 출판했다. 그 외에 찰스 아이브스에 대한 네 권의 책을 쓰거나 엮었고, 다양한 음악잡지에 중세 시대 음악부터 20세기 음악에 이르기까지 다양한 주제의 수많은 글들을 실었다.
