저자소개
찰스 오만(지은이)
1860년 인도 무자파르푸르에서 영국 농장주의 아들로 태어났다. 윈체스터 칼리지와 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 수학했으며 옥스퍼드 대학교 현대역사학과 교수, 왕립역사협회와 왕립화폐협회 및 왕립고고학회 회장을 역임했다. 1920년에 기사 작위를 받았다. 연대기 저자들이 남긴 단편적이고 왜곡된 정보들을 재구성하여 기민한 분석과 극적인 서사를 혼합한 작법으로 완성시킨 그의 작업은 선구적인 것으로 평가받는다. 저서로는 『비잔티움 제국 이야기The Story of the Byzantine Empire』, 『중세 전쟁사A History of the Art of War in the Middle Ages』, 『반도전쟁사History of the Peninsular War』 등 사십여 권이 있다.
