책소개
This book demonstrates that people's basic values and beliefs are changing, in ways that affect their political, sexual, economic, and religious behaviour. These changes are roughly predictable: to a large extent, they can be interpreted on the basis of a revised version of modernisation theory presented here. Drawing on a massive body of evidence from societies containing 85 percent of the world's population, the authors demonstrate that modernisation is a process of human development, in which economic development gives rise to cultural changes that make individual autonomy, gender equality, and democracy increasingly likely. The authors present a model of social change that predicts how the value systems play a crucial role in the emergence and flourishing of democratic institutions - and that modernisation brings coherent cultural changes that are conducive to democratisation.
This book presents a revised version of modernisation theory.

로널드 잉글하트(지은이)
미국의 정치학자이자 미시간대학교 교수로, ‘세계가치조사(World Value Survey)’를 이끌며 시민들의 가치 변화를 측정하는 일을 주도해 왔다. 미국예술과학아카데미와 미국정치사회과학아카데미의 펠로이자 정치학의 노벨상이라 불리는 요한 쉬테상(Johan Skytte Prize)을 수상했다. 스웨덴 웁살라대학교, 벨기에 브뤼셀자유대학교, 독일 뤼네부르크의 로이파나대학교에서 명예 학위를 받았다. 프랑스, 독일, 네덜란드, 스위스, 일본, 한국, 대만, 브라질, 나이지리아, 뉴질랜드에서 객원교수 또는 방문학자로 일했으며, 미국 국무부 및 유럽연합의 컨설턴트로도 활동했다. 특히 비교문화연구 분야에서 설문조사 방법론에 크게 기여한 공로를 인정받아 2014년에 세계여론조사협회(WAPOR)의 최고 영예인 헬렌 다이너먼 상(Helen Dinerman Award)을 수상했다. 주요 저서로 이 책 『조용한 혁명』 외에도 Culture Shift in Advanced Industrial Society(1990), Value Change in Global Perspective(1995, 공저), Modernization and Postmodernization(1997, 공저), Modernization, Cultural Change and Democracy(2005, 공저), Cultural Evolution(2018), Cultural Backlash(2019, 공저), Religion's Sudden Decline(2021) 등이 있다.

독일 브레멘국제댁학교의 정치학과 조교수이며 잉글하트 교수와 함께 ‘세계가치서베이’에 참여하고 있다. 그는 〈European Journal of political Research〉, 〈Comparative Politics〉, 〈International Journal of Comparative Sociology〉 등의 세계적인 정치학 저널에서 다각도로 변화하는 민주주의의 양상을 문화적·정치적 측면에서 해석한 이론을 제시하고 있다.
