책소개
The authors draw on a four-year investigation conducted in forty-seven countries that examined many aspects of K-12 schooling, such as how schools are run, what teachers teach, and what students learn in mathematics and science. Baker and LeTendre present the results of the study in a non-technical and accessible fashion, outlining the implications of current trends for both education policy discussions and theoretical explorations of the role of education in society. Running throughout the book is a discussion of how world educational trends and the forces behind them will work to change and shape the possible directions education may take in the future.

데이비드 베이커(지은이)
미국 펜실베이니아 주립대 교육정책학과 교수이다. 미시건주 앨비온 대학에서 심리학(학사)을, 보스톤 대학에서 커뮤니케이션 연구(석사)를, 존스홉킨스 대학에서 사회학(박사)을 공부했다. 1980년대 초반 베를린 막스-플랑크연구소(Max-Planck Institute for Human Development and Education) 연구원과 1984년부터 1997년까지 워싱턴 D.C. 소재 The Catholic University of America 조교수, 부교수를 거쳐, 1997년부터 펜스테이트에서 교수로 재직 중이다. 주요 저서로는 동료인 LeTendre 교수와 함께 쓴 “National Differences, Global Similarities: World Culture and the Future of Schooling”(2005)(국내에 “세계문화와 학교교육의 미래”로 번역됨)가 있고, 논문으로는 “Minds, Politics, and Gods in the Schooled Society: Consequences of the Education Revolution”(2014), 부인이자 동료인 Mimi Schaub 교수와 함께 쓴 “Conservative ideologies and the world educational culture”(2013) 등 현재까지 약 150여 편의 저술들을 발표하였다.
제럴드 르텐드러(지은이)
펜실베니아 주립대학 교육학과 교수로, The American Journal of Education의 편집위원이다. 스탠포드대학에서 사회학으로 박사학위를 받았으며, 비교국제교육 분야에서 다양한 주제의 연구를 발표해 왔다. 최근의 다른 저서로는「청소년이 되기 위한 학습: 미국과 일본 중학교에서의 성장」(Learning to be Adolescent: Growing Up in U.S. and Japanese Middle Schools)이 있다.
