미국의 시인, 작가, 민권운동가. 토니 모리슨, 오프라 윈프리 등과 함께 미국에서 가장 영향력 있는 흑인 여성 중 한 명으로 꼽힌다. 1928년 미국 미주리 주 세인트루이스에서 태어났다. 세 살 때 부모가 이혼한 뒤 친할머니 손에 자라고, 일곱 살에 성폭행당한 충격으로 열세 살 때까지 말을 하지 않고, 열여섯 살에 미혼모가 되는 등 파란만장한 유년 시절을 보냈다. 1969년, 자신의 열일곱 살 때까지의 삶을 다룬 자전적 소설 《새장에 갇힌 새가 왜 노래하는지 나는 아네》를 발표하며 베스트셀러 작가 반열에 올랐다. 이후 2013년 마지막으로 발표한 에세이 《엄마, 나 그리고 엄마》에 이르기까지 총 일곱 권의 책을 펴내며, 자신만의 ‘자서전적 소설’ 장르를 구축했다. 그 외에도 여러 권의 시집을 펴냈는데, 1971년에 발표한 첫 시집 《내가 죽기 전에 차가운 물 한 잔만 주오》로 퓰리처상 후보에 올랐다. 다재다능한 마야 안젤루는 가수, 작곡가, 배우, 극작가, 영화 감독, 프로듀서, 교수 등으로 다양한 분야에서 활약했고 마 틴 루서 킹 목사, 맬컴 엑스와 함께 민권운동에도 힘썼다. 1993년에는 빌 린턴의 요청을 받아 흑인 여성 최초로 미국 대통령 취임식에서 축시를 낭송하기도 했다. 정식 학위가 없음에도 불구하고 노스캐롤라이나 소재 웨이크포리스트 대학의 종신교수직을 받아 1981년부터 2011년까지 꾸준히 학생들을 가르쳤다. 2000년에 국가예술훈장을, 2011년에 대통령 자유 훈장을 받았고, 오십여 개가 넘는 명예학위를 받았다. 마야 안젤루는 2014년 5월 세상을 떠났다.
