Written in accessible language for a broad audience of undergraduates and graduate students, this fifth edition introductory text overviews therapeutic approaches from the main schools of thought influencing contemporary therapy practice: psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, cognitive behavioral, gender, and multicultural therapies. For this fifth edition, there is a new section on two postmodern therapies. A distinctive feature of the book is its emphasis on the lives of the theories' originators. In instances where the originator of the approach is no longer living, chapters focus mainly on their presentation of their position, although there is also material on further developments since their death. Each chapter follows a standard format, with an introduction, originator's biography, and overview of the theory, followed by therapeutic goals and interventions, case materials, example boxes, and further developments. Review and personal reflection questions encourage students to relate the material to their own lives. A conclusion reviews issues in assessing the quality of the different approaches. The book includes a glossary and an annotated bibliography. The text can be used in undergraduate and postgraduate counseling and psychotherapy courses in counselor education, psychology, social work, nursing, and other helping professions. It can also be used as an introduction for undergraduates in the behavioral and social sciences. Nelson-Jones is a fellow of the British Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy.
