지그문트 바우만(지은이)
폴란드 출신의 저명한 사회학자이자 철학자, 사회운동가. 1990 년대 탈근대 문제를 본격적으로 다루며 명성을 쌓았고 ‘액체 현대’ 시리즈를 통해 ‘20세기 최고의 지성’으로 불리게 되었다. 액체 현대란 고체처럼 고정되어 기존의 사회를 작동시키던 제도, 풍속, 도덕이 해체되면서 불확실성이 높아진 시대를 가리키는 바우만의 독창적 사유이다. 유럽 최고 지성에게 수여하는 아말 피상과 아도르노상을 수상했다. 1968년 공산당이 주도한 반유대 캠페인의 절정기에 바르샤바 대학교 교수직을 잃고 국적을 박탈당해 이스라엘로 건너갔다. 영국의 리즈대학교 사회학과 교수로 부임했으며 1990년 정년 퇴임 후 리즈대학교와 바르샤바대학교 명예교수로서 2017년 타계 전까지 활발한 연구 및 저술 활동을 선보였다. 국내에는 『액체 현대』, 『고독을 잃어버린 시간』, 『왜 우리는 불평등을 감수하는가?』 등이 출간되었으며 사회학 분야의 많은 현대 연구가 바우만에게 빚지고 있다. 『지그문트 바우만 행복해질 권리』는 소유의 크기가 곧 행복의 크기라며 끊임없이 소비를 강요하는 소비 자본주의 사회를 날카롭게 비판한다. 현대인이 느끼는 깊은 무력감이 어디에서 오는지, 왜 이리도 행복해지기가 어려운지를 탐구하고 이 시대를 살아가는 현대인에게 대안을 제시한다. 바우만은 불확실한 현대 사회에서 본래의 가치를 되찾는 방법으로 ‘인생을 예술로 바라보는 태도’가 필요하다고 강조한다. “우리 모두는 우리 삶의 예술가”라고 말하며 자신만의 고유한 작품 세계를 만들어가는 예술가처럼 직접 맞서기 어려운 문제에 스스로 도전장을 내밀고 나아가라고 응원한다. 더 나은 삶을 고민하고 있다면, 지금 바우만을 읽어야 한다.
데이비드 라이언(지은이)
스코틀랜드 에든버러 출생. 영국 요크셔 브래드포드 대학에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 현재 캐나다 퀸즈 대학에서 사회학을 가르치고 있으며 감시연구센터(Surveillance Studies Centre) 소장을 맡고 있다. 감시를 연구하는 대표적인 학자로서, 감시와 사회적 분류(social sorting), 정보사회, 정보와 기술, 종교, 지구화, 탈근대성 등 현대사회의 주요 사회적 변환에 관심을 갖고 있다. 그는 학문적 성과를 인정받아 2008년 캐나다 왕립학회 회원으로 선출되었으며, 2007년에는 미국사회학회 커뮤니케이션 및 정보 기술 분과로부터, 2012년에는 캐나다 사회학회로부터 공로상을 수상했다. 저서로는 <친애하는 빅브라더>(공저, 2013, 오월의 봄, Liquid Surveillance), <9월 11일 이후의 감시>(2011, 울력, Surveillance After September 11), Identifying Citizens: ID Cards as Surveillance(2009), Theorizing Surveillance: The Panopticon and Beyond(2006), The Electronic Eye: The Rise of Surveillance Society(1994) 등 다수가 있다.
