로버트 C. 솔로몬(지은이)
미국 텍사스 대학교(오스틴) 철학과 교수를 역임했다. 미시간 대학교 의과대학을 다니던 중 우연히 니체 수업을 청강하다가 전공을 철학으로 바꾸는 결정을 내린다. 니체, 하이데거, 사르트르를 비롯한 현상학과 실존주의에 사상적 토대를 두고 감정과 철학, 비즈니스와 철학의 관계에 대해 지속적인 관심을 보여 왔다. 아카데미에 머물러 있지 않고 철학이 삶의 현장에서 성찰의 자원이 되는 담론이어야 한다는 문제의식 하에 다양한 형태의 글쓰기를 실험했다. 아내이자 철학적 동반자인 캐슬린 히긴스 교수와 함께 쓴 『짧은 철학사A Short History of Philosophy』와 『니체가 진정으로 말한 것What Niezche Really Said』을 비롯하여 『철학의 기쁨The Joy of Philosophy』, 『회의주의자를 위한 영성Spirituality for the Skeptic』 등이 있다. 감정철학 관련 저서로는 『감정은 어떻게 내 삶을 의미 있게 만드는가Passions: Emotions and the Meaning of Life』, 『사랑을 배울 수 있다면About Love』, 『정의라는 감정에 대하여A Passions for Justice』, 『느낌에 충실하기True to Our Feelings』 등이 있고 비즈니스윤리 관련 저서로는 『윤리학과 탁월성Ethics and Excellence』, 『비즈니스에 대해 생각하는 더 좋은 방법A Better Way of Thinking about Business』 등이 있다. 45권에 이르는 저서 및 편저와 함께 2000년에는 국제감정연구학회(ISRE) 회장을 역임했고, 체이스맨해튼은행, AT&T, 폭스바겐 같은 유수 글로벌 기업의 자문역을 맡았다. 2007년 스위스 취리히 공항에서 비행기를 갈아타던 중 폐동맥 출혈로 갑작스럽게 사망했다.
