With all due reason, Western historians as well as their Korean and Chinese counterparts did not pay enough attention to the three dynasties. Due to prevailing nationalism in both Korea and China, which has provided most East Asian historians with too narrow a perspective, Korean historians inadvertently underestimated the importance of the early Chinese dynasties, for which they did not possess the appropriate means to structure their own ideas or theories. In this respect, Yu’s attempt to write the first general history of the Xia dynasty, the first of its kind in Korean, properly deserves academic acclaim. Although its author was too young to produce a fully advanced academic writing, Yu’s book, first written almost twenty years ago in an old-fashioned writing style, boasts of its own ingenious, detailed understanding and concise, clear arguments of the Xia dynasty.

Unmistakably different from the previous studies of the Xia dynasty produced by Chinese and Western scholarship, this book embraces recent archaeological discoveries while withholding its own stance as a historical writing based on traditionally respected primary sources. I would like to suggest that readers approach this book from such a perspective. Another merit of this book is that it provides a writing structure that is easy to grasp. Without hesitation, I would recommend this book to every reader, including professional historians and the general public alike as one of the earliest, complete works on the Xia dynasty that leads to a complete understanding of early Chinese history.
