1951년 미국 아이오와 주의 디모인에서 태어났다. 『바디 : 우리 몸 안내서』, 『거의 모든 사생활의 역사』, 『나를 부르는 숲』, 『빌 브라이슨의 셰익스피어 순례』, 『언어의 탄생』 등을 출간했고, 지난 50년간 「선데이 타임스」 베스트셀러 목록에 이름을 올린 작가들 중에서 가장 많은 베스트셀러 기록을 보유하고 있다. 2003년 처음 출간되어 널리 격찬을 받은 저서 『거의 모든 것의 역사』는 106주간 베스트셀러 목록에 올랐으며, 영국 왕립학회가 전 세계적으로 가장 뛰어난 대중 과학서에 수여하는 어벤티스 상과 유럽연합이 선정하는 데카르트 상을 모두 받았고, 21세기에 가장 많이 팔린 대중 과학서가 되었다. 그는 더럼 대학교의 총장을 역임했고, 왕립학회의 명예 회원이다. 현재 영국에서 살고 있다.
