Book Introduction
It is difficult to say where disaster begins, to point towards one particular happening as the first definite step towards distant cataclysm. Looking back, Tim Ekaterin sees the beginning as the day his boss stepped into a fountain. Onwards from there, he comes across people and events as yet unconnected but which, when woven together by time and chance, leads towards violent explosive action and the threat of death. Set in the worlds of thoroughbred racing and merchant banking, the story covers a span of three years, growing from quiet harmless-seeming seeds to a wholly horrific harvest.

딕 프랜시스(지은이)
1920년 영국의 웨일스에서 경마 기수의 아들로 태어난 딕 프랜시스는 15살에 학업을 중단하고 경마계에 뛰어들어 1938년에 경마 조교수가 된다. 제2차 세계대전에 비행기 수리공으로 참전한 이후 경마계로 다시 돌아와 350회가 넘는 경기에서 우승했으며 1953~1954년 연속으로 챔피언 기수에 등극했다. 엘리자베스 모후의 기수를 지내면서 승승장구 했으나, 심각한 부상이 겹치다가 1957년 경마 최고의 대회인 그랜드 내셔널 경기 중 마지막 점프에서 말이 갑자기 멈춰서는 바람에 승리를 놓쳤고, 그는 끝내 은퇴하게 된다. 이후 런던의 <선데이 익스프레스> 지에서 경마 기자로 일하면서 글을 쓰기 시작한 딕 프랜시스는 자신의 기수 경험을 바탕으로 쓴 첫 스릴러 《경마장 살인 사건》을 필두로 약 40여 편의 경마 스릴러를 출간했고, 《Forfeit》(1970년), 《채찍을 쥔 오른손》(1981년), 《Come To Grief》(1996년)으로 에드거 상 최우수 소설 상을 세 번이나 수상했으며, 영국 추리 작가 협회에서 수여하는 골드 대거 상(1979년), 카르티에 다이아몬드 대거 상(1989년)을 수상했다. 1983년에는 작가로서의 업적을 인정받아 영국 왕실로부터 OBE 작위를 받았으며, 2000년 CBE 작위로 승격되었다. 1996년 미국 미스터리 작가 협회로부터 그랜드 마스터 칭호를 받으며 세계에서 가장 뛰어난 스릴러 작가 중 한 명으로 꼽힌 딕 프랜시스는 영국 타임스가 선정한 위대한 작가 50인에도 선정되었다. 그의 마지막 작품인 《Dead Heat》, 《Silks》, 《Even Money》는 오랜 기간 동안 함께 리서치 작업 등을 해 온 아들 펠릭스 프랜시스와의 공동 작업으로 이루어졌다. 2010년 2월 81세의 나이로 사망하였다.
