Author Introduction
헨드릭 하멜(지은이)
1630년 네덜란드 호린험에서 태어나 1950년에 동인도연합회사(VOC) 소속 선박의 포수로 첫 승선한 후 빠르게 승진해 서기와 보좌관에 이어 선박의 항해 유지와 재정을 맡는 회계원이 되었다. 1653년 스페르베르호에 회계원으로 승선해 바타비아(현재의 자카르타)를 떠나 일본의 나가사키로 가던 중 폭풍우로 인해 제주도에 표착했다. 1654년에 서울로 송환되었다가 1656년 전라병영으로 이송되어 10년간 억류되어 살던 중, 1666년 일곱 명의 동료들과 일본으로 탈출했다. 하멜은 조선에 억류되었던 13년간 밀린 월급을 받기 위해 보고서를 VOC에 제출하였는데, 이것이 오늘날 우리에게 『하멜 표류기』로 알려지게 되었다. 1692년에 고국 네덜란드에서 생을 마감했다.
