실비아 플라스(지은이)
미국의 시인, 소설가. 1932년 10월 27일 보스턴에서 태어났다. 여덟 살 때 처음 <보스턴 헤럴드>에 시를 실을 정도로 어려서부터 문학적 영감이 풍부했다. 1950년에 미국 스미스대학 장학생으로 입학했으며, 우등으로 졸업 후 풀브라이트 장학생으로 영국 케임브리지대학교에서 공부했다. 그곳에서 촉망받던 시인 테드 휴스와 만나 1956년 결혼하고 1957년부터 1년간 모교인 스미스대학에서 영문학 강사로 재직했다. 1960년 10월에 첫 시집 『거상』을 출간했다. 같은 해 4월에 딸 프리다가 태어났고 1962년에 아들 니컬러스가 태어났다. 1962년 가을에 테드 휴스와 별거에 들어갔으며, 두 아이를 키우다 1963년 2월 11일 스스로 생을 마감했다. 죽기 몇 주 전 자전적소설 『벨 자』(1963)가 빅토리아 루커스라는 가명으로 영국에서 출간되었으며, 사후에 시집 『에어리얼』(1965) 『호수를 건너며Crossing the Water』(1971) 『겨울나무Winter Trees』(1971)가 출간되었다. 1981년 테드 휴스가 엮은 『실비아 플라스 시 전집』은 이듬해 퓰리처상을 수상했다. 시 부문에서 작가 사후에 출간된 책이 퓰리처상을 수상한 것은 처음이며 지금까지 유일하다. 『낭비 없는 밤들』은 테드 휴스가 1977년 실비아 플라스의 미공개작들을 포함한 단편과 산문, 일기 등을 묶어 출간한 『조니 패닉과 꿈의 성경』에서 단편과 산문을 선별해 역연대순으로 엮은 책이다. 다양한 시기와 주제의 작품들을 통해 실비아 플라스의 작가적 재능과 발전을 엿볼 수 있다.
