Book Introduction
The founder of world-systems analysis explores what we can expect in the twenty-first century. The twentieth century has witnessed both the triumphs and failures of the dreams that have informed the modern world. In Utopistics, Immanuel Wallerstein argues that the global order that nourished those dreams is on the brink of disintegration. 컬럼비아대학교 사회학과에서 아프리카 연구로 학사학위를 받았다. 동 대학과 뉴욕주립대학 교수로 재직했다. 2005년까지 뉴욕주립대학교의 페르낭브로델센터 소장을 역임했다. 종속이론과 아날학파의 영향을 받았으며, 세계의 역사와 사회 전체를 하나의 시스템으로 보는 세계체제론으로 국제적인 주목을 받았다. 주요 저서로 『근대세계체제』(The Modern World-System, 전 4 권, 1974~2011), 『세계체제 분석: 이론과 방법론』(World-Systems Analysis: Theory and Methodology, 1982), 『역사적 자본주의/자본주의 문명』(Historical Capitalism, with Capitalist Civilization, 1995), 『미국 패권의 몰락』(Decline of American Power: The U. S. in a Chaotic World, 2003) 등이 있다.
