브루스 커밍스(지은이)
1943년 미국 뉴욕주 로체스터 출생. 1965년 데니슨대학 심리학과를 졸업한 뒤 1967년 인디애나대학에서 석사, 1975년 컬럼비아대학에서 정치학 박사학위를 취득했다. 1967~1968년 서울에서 평화봉사단US Peace Corps으로 일하면서 한국과 처음 인연을 맺었다. 1975~1977년 스워츠모어대학 조교수를 시작으로 1977~1987년 워싱턴대학, 1987~1994년 시카고대학, 1994~1997년 노스웨스턴대학 교수를 지낸 뒤 1997년부터 시카고대학에서 석좌교수 등으로 재직하고 있다. 1999년 미국 예술·과학학술원 회원으로 선출됐으며, 앞으로 나올 『케임브리지 한국사』의 현대사 부분 편집장을 맡고 있다. 주저인 『한국전쟁의 기원』 1권으로 미국 역사학회의 존 킹 페어뱅크 저작상John King Fairbank Book Award, 2권으로 국제연구협회의 퀸시 라이트 저작상Quincy Wright Book Award을 수상했으며 김대중 학술상(2007), 제주 4·3평화상(2017)을 받았다. 주요 저서로 『한국전쟁의 기원』 1·2(1981, 1990) 외에 Korea’s Place in the Sun : A Modern History(1997. 김동노 외 옮김, ��브루스 커밍스의 한국현대사』, 2001), North Korea : Another Country(2004. 남성욱 옮김, 『김정일 코드』, 2005), The Korean War : A History(2010. 조행복 옮김, 『브루스 커밍스의 한국전쟁』, 2017) 등이 있다.
