오슨 스콧 카드(지은이)
1951년 워싱턴 주 리치랜드 출생. 브리검 영 대학교에서 고고학을 공부하다 연극으로 전공을 바꾸고 시와 각본을 쓰면서 작가로서의 첫발을 내딛는다. 이후 브리검 영 대학교의 출판부인 BYU프레스와 잡지사 《엔사인Ensign》에서 편집자로 근무하며 ‘바이런 월리’란 이름으로 첫 번째 단편 소설인 「게르트 프램Gert Fram」(1977)을 발표한다. 그리고 『엔더의 게임Ender's Game』의 바탕이 되는 초기 단편을 여러 출판사에 투고하는데, 이 작품은 유서 깊은 SF 잡지인 《아날로그 사이언스 픽션 앤드 팩트Analog Science Fiction and Fact》에 실린다. 이후 프리랜서 작가로 일하며 1981년 유타 주립 대학교에서 영문학 석사 학위를 취득한 뒤 노터 데임 대학에 박사 과정을 거치려 했으나 경제적 사정으로 그만둔다. 그리고 1983년 《컴퓨트!Compute!》란 잡지에서 다시 편집자로 취직하나 또다른 대표작인 앨빈 위긴 3부작이 계약되면서 프리랜서 작가 생활로 돌아오게 된다. 이후 발표한 과학 소설 『엔더의 게임』(1985)과 후속작 『사자(死者)의 대변인Speaker for the Dead』(1986)으로 연이어 휴고 상과 네뷸러 상을 동시 수상한 유일한 작가가 되면서, 카드는 장르 소설의 거장으로 자리매김했다. 그리고 『제노사이드Xenocide』(1991), 『엔더의 그림자Ender's Shadow』(1999) 등의 작품으로 엔더 시리즈를 이어 나간다. 『엔더의 게임』은 개빈 후드 감독, 아사 버터필드 주연의 영화로 제작되었다. 카드는 소설뿐만 아니라 게임/ 만화 등의 스토리 작가, 칼럼니스트 등 다방면으로 활동하고 있으며, 서던 버지니아 교수로 재직하면서 별도로 창작 워크숍을 비정기적으로 열고 있다. 저자 홈페이지 : www.hatrack.com
