How do large corporations encourage their senior managers to become more entrepreneurial? This is a key question which is seldom addressed in mainstream entrepreneurship studies. Professor Sathe has written this study based on hundreds of hours of interviews with senior managers to help understand why some organizations and some top managers are better than others in fostering entrepreneurship leading to successful new business growth. Corporate Entrepreneurship explores the real world of top managers in a systematic and comprehensive way, examining business realities, the management culture, the corporate philosophy, the organizational politics, the personalities and the personal agendas of the people at the top. The book offers both a theory of corporate entrepreneurship and practical advice on how to manage it better. An interesting and valuable contribution to the literature on strategic management, this is a book that will appeal to graduate students, researchers and reflective practitioners.

Vijay Sathe examines how top managers--corporate executives, division general managers and the division's top management team members--influence corporate entrepreneurship, specifically new business creation in a corporate division. Corporate Entrepreneurship takes the reader into the real world of top managers to explore a relatively uncharted territory in a systematic and comprehensive way. The business realities, the management culture, the corporate philosophy, the organizational politics, the personalities, and the personal agendas of the people at the top are vividly portrayed in these pages. New business creation is innately difficult and it does not help that top managers are insufficiently educated and trained for it. This book offers both a theory of corporate entrepreneurship based on the real-world experience of top managers and practical advice on how to manage it for better results. Vijay Sathe is Professor of Management in The Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. He has published numerous journal articles and three other books: Controller Involvement in Management (Prentice Hall, 1982), Culture and Related Corporate Realities (Irwin, 1985), and a co-authored book, Organization (Third Edition, Irwin, 1992). Sathe has taught in MBA and executive education programs in the United States and Europe. He has also consulted with government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and private and public companies around the globe.

시대를 앞서가는 경영철학과 미래사회에 대한 탁월한 통찰력으로 널리 알려진 피터 드러커는 1909년 11월 오스트리아 빈에서 공무원인 아버지와 의사인 어머니 사이에 장남으로 태어났다. 1920년에 독일 함부르크로 건너갔고, 후에 프랑크푸르트로 옮겨 일간지 프랑크푸르트 제너럴 엔자이저의 고위 편집담당자로 일하며 야간에는 프랑크푸르트대학교 박사과정을 다녔다. 1932년 프랑크푸르트대학교에서 국제 법학박사 학위를 받았다. 그의 주요 연구들이 나치로부터 출간 금지와 분서 조치를 당하면서, 영국으로 이주하여 금융기관에서 일하며 집필활동을 하다가, 1937년 미국으로 이주하게 되었다. 1939년 영국에서부터 준비한 《경제인의 종말》을 미국에서 출간하고, 《산업사회의 미래》를 이어서 출간하면서 미국 사회의 주목을 받게 되었다. 1940년대 사라로렌스대학교, 베닝턴대학교 등에서 경제학, 정치학, 철학 등을 가르쳤다. 1944년 GM을 연구할 기회를 얻게 되어, 그 결과물로 《기업의 개념》을 발간하면서 본격적으로 경영학을 체계화하는 작업에 몰두하기 시작했다. 1950년 뉴욕대학교 경영대학원에 합류하여 경영학을 연구하고 강의 및 컨설팅하게 되었다. 이때 집필한 《경영의 실제》는 경영자 교육의 교본 역할을 했고, 20년간 경영교육과 컨설팅을 체계화하고 저술을 발표하면서 경영을 실행과 학문으로 정립했다. 1971년 클레어몬트 그레주에이트대학교로 옮겨 2002년 강의를 은퇴할 때까지 총 39권의 저서를 출간했고, 수많은 논문을 쓰고 컨설팅했다. 경영학의 대부이자 세계 5대 컨설턴트이며, 사회변혁을 선도하는 사회생태학자인 피터 드러커는 후대에 기억될 학자, 저자, 컨설턴트로서 여전히 위업과 지혜로 세인들에게 기억되고 있다.
