매사추세츠 주 로웰Lowell 출신으로 펜실베이니아 주립대학에서 석사학위를 받았다. 언론계에서 활동하며 탐사보도 전문가로 명성을 얻었으며, ≪우스터 선데이 텔레그램≫의 문학 담당 편집자로 근무했고 ≪로스앤젤레스 타임스≫, ≪워싱턴 포스트≫, ≪스미스소니언≫ 등 여러 신문과 잡지에 칼럼을 연재했다. 클라크 대학 로버트 H. 고더드 도서관 후원회 회장을 역임했고, 국립인문재단 펠로 연구원이다. 지은 책으로 <젠틀 매드니스>, <찬란한 문자A Splendor of Letters>, <인내와 투지Patience and Fortitude>, <모든 책은 독자에게로Every Book Its Reader> 등이 있다.
