Over the past several decades, we have seen the number of democratic societies around the globe increase, and during the past ten years, there has been a heightened awareness of the increasing conflicts and problems that both directly and indirectly affect our everyday lives. With the Middle EastÆs never ending conflict, the war on terrorism, and the numerous financial and environmental crises, peopleÆs sense of safety, power, and representation has diminished in part because they feel they have no voice.
Designers, however, have used their skills to communicate their dissent throughout history and are doing so even more now with the birth of the Web and the increasing ease of distributing posters and other printed materials. A picture is worth a thousand words and designers have used this adage to their advantage by creating simple yet powerful designs that immediately convey poignant messages to their viewers. The Design of Dissent will examine graphic work focusing on social and political concerns from around the globe. The time is certainly ripe as the U.S. -- and world -- flare in opposition on so many important issues.
Presents graphic posters which express dissent with prevailing regimes and government policies in countries around the world and concern with such political issues as human rights, terrorism, Iraq, the 2004 presidential election, and the Bush Administration.

밀턴 글레이저(지은이)
1929년 뉴욕에서 태어났다. 쿠퍼 유니언 미술학교를마치고 폴브라이트 장학금을 받아 이탈리아 볼로냐에 있는 미술아카데미에서 공부했다. 1954년 푸시판 스튜디오스를 공동 설립하고, 1968년에 클레이 펠커와 함께 「뉴욕 매거진」을 창간했다. 1974년에는 밀턴 글레이저 사(社)를 만들고 1983년에 월터 버나드와 더불어 출판 디자인 회사인 WBMG를 세웠다. 'I♥NY'를 디자인한 디자이너로 유명하며, 국제적으로 명성이 높다. 디자인 교육자로서도 독보적인 위상을 차지하고 있다. 지은 책으로 <Graphic Design Art is War>, <불찬성의 디자인> 등이 있다.
미르코 일리치(지은이)
보스니아 태생의 일러스트레이터 겸 디자이너이다. 《타임TIME》지 국제판 아트디렉터, 《뉴욕 타임스》 사설면 아트디렉터를 역임하였다. 1995년 그래픽 디자인과 3D 컴퓨터 그래픽스, 영화 타이틀 스튜디오인 머코 일릭 사를 설립하였다. 밀턴 글레이저와 쿠퍼 유니언 대학에서 디자인 고급과정을 가르쳤고, 지금은 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트에서 일러스트레이션 석사과정을 가르치고 있다. 스티븐 헬러와 함께 《천재적 업적: 그래픽 디자인의 100가지 아이콘》, 《디지털 시대의 핸드레터링》을 썼고, 밀턴 글레이저와 함께 《The Design of Dissent-불찬성의 디자인》을 펴냈다.
