션 디자이너로서 커리어를 시작했다. 캘빈 클라인, 랄프 로렌, 바나나 리퍼블릭 등 브랜드에서 20년 가까이 일했다. 알코올중독을 앓은 어머니를 보살피며 자란 경험을 바탕으로 쓴 데뷔작 『셔기 베인』으로 문단에 혜성처럼 등장했다. 『셔기 베인』은 2020년 부커상, 브리티시 북어워드 올해의 책을 포함해 수많은 권위 있는 상을 휩쓸고 1백만 부 이상 판매되었다. 2022년 출간한 『먼고 해밀턴』으로 뛰어난 작품성과 대중성을 다시 한번 검증 받았다. 현재 뉴욕과 글래스고를 오가며 새로운 작품을 집필하고 있다.
