1947년 미들섹스에서 태어났다. 묘지에서 정원사로 일하던 열일곱 살에 『반지의 제왕』을 처음 읽고 J. R. R. 톨킨이 열어준 신비하고 아름다운 세계에 빠져 들었다. 톨킨의 작품은 그가 살던 고향을 가운데땅으로, 친구들을 순찰자들로 만들어 그의 삶을 한순간에 매혹적인 서사시로 가득 차게 했고, 『반지의 제왕』을 읽은 이래 톨킨의 작품은 그에게 늘 새로운 영감의 원천이 되어왔다. 얼링 아트 스쿨에서 그래픽 디자인을 공부한 그는, 학창 시절부터 켈트 신화와 북유럽 신화를 연구하고 묘사하는 데에 주력해서 지금까지 신화의 매력에 푹 빠져 있다. 그는 『요정의 나라 Faeries』, 『마비노존 Mabinogion』, 『성 Castle』, 『멀린 꿈꾸다 Merlin Dreams』 같은 작품들뿐만 아니라, 『반지의 제왕』 저자탄생 100주년 기념판에 이르는 다양하고도 광범위한 일러스트를 그려왔다. 영화 「반지의 제왕」 3부작의 디자인 콘셉트를 맡아 성공적으로 연출해 오스카 상을 수상했다. 또한 테리 존스의 「바이킹 에릭 Eric the Viking」 영화에서도 디자인 콘셉트를 창작했으며, 일러스트판 『일리어드 The Illiad』로 카네기 메달을 수상했다.
