마리오 바르가스 요사(지은이)
1936년 페루 아레키파에서 태어났다. 리마의 산마르코스대학에서 문학과 법학을 공부하고, 스페인 마드리드대학에서 박사학위를 받았다. 1952년 16세에 군사학교를 중퇴한 뒤, 1년 전 썼던 희곡을 무대에 올리고 시를 출판하며 작가로 데뷔했다. 1963년 레온시오 프라도 군사학교 시절의 경험을 바탕으로 쓴 장편 『도시와 개들』을 출간하며 주목받기 시작해, 1966년 발표한 장편 『녹색 집』으로 페루 국가소설상, 스페인 비평상, 로물로 가예고스 상을 수상하면서 세계적 명성을 얻었다. 1985년 프랑스 정부가 수여하는 레지옹도뇌르 훈장을, 1994년 스페인어권에서 가장 권위 있는 문학상인 세르반테스상을 받았다. 이 밖에 아스투리아스 왕자상, T. S. 엘리엇상, 예루살렘상, 부다페스트상 등 다수의 문학상을 받았으며 2010년 노벨문학상을 수상했다. 장편소설과 에세이, 시집, 연극 대본 등 70여 권의 책을 출간했다. 1959년 파리로 거처를 옮긴 뒤 런던과 바르셀로나 등을 거쳐 1974년 자발적 망명생활에 종지부를 찍고 페루로 돌아와 영주하였으며, 1990년 페루 대통령 선거에 출마했다 알베르토 후지모리에게 패해 낙선했으나, 이후로도 라틴아메리카문학을 대표하는 작가이자 지식인으로 왕성한 사회활동을 펼쳤다. 2022년 노벨문학상 수상자 및 세계의 문화예술인들과 함께 베를린에 모여, 러시아의 우크라이나 침공에 반대하며 우크라이나 국민을 지지하는 연설에 참여했다. 2025년 4월 13일 향년 89세를 일기로 별세했다.
